This was a business competition hosted by Forbes JAPAN which features small to midsized companies known as “SMALL GIANTS” scattered across Japan within their respective local communities;
excavated to present to the world their true potential, and to decide once and for all, which “SMALL GIANT” is indeed the best! This year, our company was selected as one of the 7 finalists out of
more than 100 candidate companies after a thorough preliminary screening process. Ultimately, we managed to score the Grand Title of this competition through the immaculate presentation
conducted by our CEO and President Manabu Aizawa.

AMCON’s Sludge Dewatering Press
What is a Sludge Dewatering Press? Sludge Dewatering Presses are machines that extract water from so called “sludge” which is a subcategory of industrial waste; a byproduct of wastewater treatment. The purpose of the machine is to reduce the water content of the “sludge” and decrease the overall mass of the industrial waste, thereby reducing the cost of disposal. These machines are utilized in wastewater treatment facilities such as sewage treatment plants, industrial facilities, and various types of factories.
You may not have heard of our products yet, but in fact, they are an integral part of our lives that supports essential infrastructure from behind the scenes. Not only are our products used by valued customers here in Japan, but they are also installed in over 77 countries and regions in facilities such as: a beverage factory in Tanzania, a can manufacturing factory in Papua New Guinea, and a whiskey distillery in Scotland.
There are a variety of sludge dewatering machines including ones that spin at an accelerated rate like washing machines do, or ones that use pressurization to dewater sludge, however, the sludge dewatering presses we produce are designed in a way unlike anything that was developed in the past. When compared to dewatering machines of the past, the consumption of rinsing water has been reduced by almost 1/200, and has been designed to be more economical, consuming far less energy. To add to these perks, it is designed to operate fully autonomously and there is no need to worry about daily complex maintenances.
Our company was established 50 years ago as a business specializing in the maintenance and management of wastewater treatment. To solve the challenges of maintenance and the difficulties of using the machinery involved, we developed our proprietary Sludge Dewatering Press - VOLUTE™, 30 years ago. Currently, we are also developing peripheral devices, and have developed machines for further drying and fermenting the dewatered sludge. We are engaged in projects that use sludge as a raw material for fertilizer, returning it to farmland through composting.
Currently, we have subsidiaries in China and the Czech Republic alongside a representative office in the Philippines. On top of that, we are partnered with sales distributors in 15 countries, namely the US, India and Mexico. As you can see, we are consistently striving to expand our global sales network and to provide maintenance services beyond expectation.
Despite there being similar sludge dewatering machines with the same mechanism as ours sold worldwide, we believe we have an overwhelming advantage over our competitors. As pioneers in the development of the screw-press type sludge dewatering machines, we offer unique know-how and soft services that we have cultivated over the years. Additionally, by implementing a hybrid business model that combines product-out and market-in strategies, we distinguish ourselves from price competition and continue to succeed in various countries.
